The island of Rhodes, lies 12 miles off the south-western Caria, now mainland Turkey. According to myth, the island sprang from the sea to be conferred upon the sun god, Helios, by Zeus who had neglected to include him when dispensing existing cities and islands to the gods. The prevaling design bore a head of Helios on the obverse and an opening rose on the reverse. The Greek for a rose was ρόδov (rhodon). It was also the name of the nymph Rhodos, daughter of Aphrodite. She in turn was linked to Helios as the mother of seven sons she bore him.
